A series of concept models and experiments were conducted in search of suitable design direction to move forward for the thesis.

After various experiments conducted, the Inward expansion concept was selected to be developed further. Compared with other experiments and concepts, it allows true adaptability to individuals’ changing needs by providing the mechanisms for spatial expansion and reduction without the need for external heavy machineries - as the machineries are embedded into the architecture itself.

The idea of expanding space from the inside at X-Y directions will minimise disturbance to neighbours above and below. The exterior soft skin attached to the outer edge floor plate will facilitate for the expansion to occur inside, and thus protecting users from any falling dangers.

The selected concept had the potential to address all the key points identified in Phase 1.
